Altamaha-ha

A mysterious river creature said to swim through the marshes of coastal Georgia.

Area: Altamaha River near Darien, GeorgiaCase: ALTAMAHA-HA

What is it?

Altamaha-ha, nicknamed Altie, is a legendary water creature from southeastern Georgia. Local stories describe a strange animal swimming near the mouth of the Altamaha River. Its existence has not been scientifically confirmed.

What does it look like?

Witness descriptions vary, but stories often mention:

  • A long, snake-like body
  • A small head on a long neck
  • Flippers and a powerful tail
  • A creature that briefly surfaces before slipping underwater

Where has it been spotted?

Reports center on Darien and nearby parts of McIntosh County, Georgia. The surrounding tidal creeks, marshes, and old rice fields provide plenty of places for a river mystery to hide.

Evidence

Eyewitness accounts and reports of unusual hissing sounds keep the legend alive, but they do not prove that an unknown animal lives there. Darien's welcome center even displays an Altie sculpture based on witness descriptions. The sculpture celebrates the story; it is not evidence of the creature.

Investigator notes

Could a familiar animal or a floating log look mysterious from far away? Investigators should record the time, location, weather, and what they actually saw before deciding on an explanation. Compare observations with local wildlife and keep guesses separate from evidence.

Safety tip

Investigate with a trusted grown-up from a safe, permitted viewing spot. Stay back from riverbanks, never enter the water to follow a sighting, and give wildlife plenty of space.
